THE WOMEN WE LOVE TO HATE
That’s a partial subtitle to Sady Doyle’s debut book, Trainwreck: The Women We Love to Hate, Mock and Fear…and Why. In today’s new episode of “Just The Right Book Podcast,” Doyle, founder of the Tiger Beatdown blog, explains her title to podcast host Roxanne Coady: “A trainwreck is a woman who is publicly shamed, who sees her suffering become a form of entertainment because she is sexually overabundant, emotionally overabundant or preferably both.” Doyle cites Britney Spears, Hillary Clinton, Marilyn Monroe, Billie Holiday, Whitney Houston, Charlotte Bronte and Sylvia Plath as falling into that framework. Trying to tear the cover off what we might observe on the surface but not fully understand, Doyle says, “Women themselves, when we are cruel to each other, I almost think it’s a survival strategy.” Theories and insights abound – you’ve got to hear the full interview surrounding this important work.
SO HOW’S IT GOING, YOU ASK?
Well, in our first two months of “Book Podcastdom,” we’ve welcomed to the show: the most profilic bestselling author of all time, the world’s leading French chef, authors whose latest books sat on the cover of The New York Times Review of Books, a former Saturday Night Live writer, a biographer who found sympathy for Al Capone, well-known hosts from other popular book podcasts, a pioneer in the fragrance industry whose autobiography tells an incredible story, and the writer of what has been called the most important book ever written on mental illness. We’re just warming up!
HOW A MANIAC TOUCHED HER LIFE
What a moving and insightful account of her meeting with iconic children’s author Jerry Spinelli and what his classic Maniac Magee meant to our podcast team member Melissa Sandler. She and her son had the chance to meet him during an event at R.J. Julia Booksellers – owned by our podcast host Roxanne – and it’s the subject of our new blog, not to be missed!
We couldn’t be more excited as we scroll down the anticipated guest list for future episodes: Anne Patchett (Commonwealth), George Saunders (Lincoln in the Bardo), Jason Stanley (How Propaganda Works), Amy Dickinson (Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things), and Charles Dickens (just making sure you’re still paying attention).
IDEAS FOR YOUR NEXT READ
Ok, so I counted: In the first 14 episodes of “Just The Right Book Podcast,” Roxanne and her guests have discussed 138 different books. That’s part of our charter – to provide great ideas for your next read. To see a list of the books, you can scan the Episodes page on our website. Another great source is the Staff Recommendations page of R.J. Julia – very personalized, very informative.
